ELI5: Why does the West Coast have a much more laidback, easygoing culture than the East?

Did you see the map that went with the article? We seem pretty mentioned in the map.

Look I'm fine with his premise but he should have stuck to his side of the proverbial fence. Canadians don't have the same culture, politics, etc... as Americans do. We just don't. For example we're still part of the Common Wealth which is a constitutional monarchy. We govern ourselves based on the parliamentary system not republicanism. That last part is really important. Remember that time Obama couldn't get anything done for 6 years because Congress and the Senate belonged to the other party? Yeah that can't happen under our system as the Prime Minister is always the leader of the governing party.

Do I need to go into universal healthcare or our fondness for socialism? Maybe get into the whole gay rights issue? Discuss the charter of rights and freedoms? Maybe discuss how much more historically stable our economy is?

Or shall I just end with the point that on average Canadians know far more about Americans than Americans know about us? Or I could just point to the article as a perfect example of that.

Apologies for being bitchy but this particular subject really irks me and that map in particular is an issue. On the surface Canadians and Americans seem similar but scratch that surface and you'll find we are quite different.

Once more I apologize for taking a tone. I let my frustration get the better of me. I'm sorry if I upset anyone.

Crap! And I owe an apology to any Canadians of American descent who might feel excluded by my comments. Please do not assume from my ill mannered post that you and your culture of origin aren't welcome here as nothing could be further from the truth. As with all immigrants your home nation's culture adds to the rich cultural tapestry that make our multicultural nation great. Please forgive my overly nationalistic pride and please forgive me if I insulted you in any way.
