My mother is a lot like Emersyn's mom, I think. I could do no right, even if my siblings had done the same things before I did. I was constantly in trouble over imaginary slights. And if I liked something she didn't tell me I liked it was immediately condemned. She never talked to me about sex or birth control either. I at least had friends that talked about it and we went and got it ourselves. We were by no means responsible teenagers, but we knew it enough to know we didn't want kids. My mom never knew. All she ever said was if I got pregnant I was on my own, whatever that meant.

It's possible Emersyn lives in an area with little access to birth control for girls. I went to planned Parenthood, because it was close and I was told my mom was not going to find out. If all she had was her regular doctor she might not know her medical records don't need to be shared with her parents, but they still can see billing if they share insurance. Emersyn is probably very conditioned by her mom to be helpless. Her rebellion is good, she needs it in order to grow. Her mom, unfortunately, sees that rebellion as losing control. Control she should not have to begin with, especially now that her daughter is a legal adult.
