Why the EU needs Britain as much as Britain needs the EU

You're right that I don't speak for all of us, though when it comes to the issue of EU/national identity I am with the majority of British people as the article I linked proved.

But in what sense is it 'bigoted'? I think it's a shame that people feel unable to identify with the nation they're a part of, particularly as no 'European' identity exists in reality, and I think some of it - in my experience - comes from a kind of self-loathing. Often it's inspired by political beliefs and a kind of extreme centre-ground liberalism, rejecting the meaningfulness or validity of nationhood or national identity, seeing themselves as "citizens of the world" and seeing any degree of 'nationalism' or identification with any nation or culture as a bad thing to be ashamed of.

I think it's a particularly difficult issue when it's not clear which nation someone should identify with or feel at home in, because I think a sense of place in the world and a knowledge of where 'home' is is vital for human flourishing. This is one of the problems I have with treating people like capital that can just move around the world markets at will: it destroys communities and families and the roots we, as humans, naturally put down. And there's a person in my life who has made me consider this point quite seriously since I met her.

I have a very dear friend who spent her entire childhood moving around for her parent's jobs. She was born in the UK but only lived here until she was 5, after that they moved around loads, to places like Germany, Belgium and France and even as far as Oman, going to an international school there, before returning here last year for university. I can tell from talking to her it's really fucked with her sense of identity: She switches subconsciously between using 'they' or 'you' and 'we' when talking about British people. Sometimes she feels British, but other times she doesn't know what she is because she doesn't feel she has enough grounding in any given place that she's lived in.
