Sleep was fitful, but the weight of Roslin against him was as much comfort as could possibly be given in the situation. She, at least, seemed to be dozing off just fine, and it wasn't long before he himself was in the realm just between awareness and a state of blessed unconsciousness. Until the lady was snatched up from his side by an invisible force.

Panic flooded his being like the Mander after a week of heavy rain, and receding footsteps had him rolling onto his belly, pushing himself to his feet with bound hands and reaching upward to claw at the bag fastened at his neck. The twine that bound it was too secure to be undone, and there must have been a sailor amongst the thieves, for the knot was too complex to work out.

The sack itself, however, was old and threads were starting to fray just at the edges. With a mighty tug and a twist the cloth tore, the cool night breeze cradling his face with gentle fingers as he breathed deeply. The remaining material came away easily until there was only the cord about his neck, shreds of burlap falling to the ground at his feet. There was but one though in his mind; some brigand or the other had dragged his cousin off to have their way with her, or maybe several of them.

The knight wasn't much use, tied up as he was and with no knowledge of the surrounding area, but dark shapes on the ground did not stir as he half-ran in the direction the footsteps had gone, dewy grass slick beneath his feet and nearly causing him to stumble more than once. There was no fire, and only moonlight illuminated the way. He feared to know what it would show him.

It was as he suspected, Roslin sitting on a rock a few meters through the encampment, and her assailant standing just in front, dagger in hand. Anger replaced fear, descending like a storm of wildfire as he charged the darkened silhouette. As his shoulder connected with wool and leathers he was surprised to feel the body of a woman beneath travel-worn clothing, and the momentum carried them both forward toward the ground.
