For example, Microsoft rates the battery life of their AMD surface 4 with standard standby time and typical video streaming. That’s how we get to those ridiculous 20h claims.
The thing is, you aren’t using CPU when the computer is in standby, and when you stream video from YouTube or other source you are using hardware acceleration.
If you actually work and do things like compiling code while on battery, and standardize things like screen brightness, a MacBook Air will be much faster than an Intel or AMD 15-25W (another lie, btw. It’s more like 40 with 50 peak from Intel and AMD is similar while plugged in) chip, while using 4 to 5x less battery.
This is because M1 uses peak 13W for the CPU and achieve superior performance, while ULV class AMD and Intel PCs can peak at 50 while plugged in, and are heavily power throttled while on battery and perform even worse without being plugged in. Intel Macs always had the same CPU performance regardless of being plugged in or not, and that’s why people were always confident in trusting Macs.
For example, compare the same code compile (chrome, Firefox) benchmark between the latest and greatest XPS13 and a MacBook Air. The MacBook will be much faster, and have 80% battery remaining. A Dell will be slower, and be empty.
So yeah, regarding performance and battery life Apple was always consistent and trustworthy. Their laptops even with Intel chips behaved similarly in performance regardless of being on the field (battery) or plugged in.
Even Intel ultrabooks can have massive power throttling while on battery (XPS, I tested it and there are reviews of it online) and AMD models have absolutely shit tier turbo boost behavior. Battery life claims from all OEMs are absolutely pathetic and a shit show, and most reviewers are still riding it.
If people don’t need consistent performance and great battery life while doing actual work they don’t need pro, expensive equipment as laptops.
Anyway, Apple is by far the best regarding battery life claims, always offered consistent and trustworthy performance, and of course with their new chips they are on another class. And bonus, with the m1 there’s no turbo boost shenanigans for a few nano seconds.
I wonder, if Apple used the same low level, pathetic-like battery life measurements as all shit OEMs such as Microsoft with their standby Schlick, how would they rate their battery life? Weeks?
