I actually just had my first pvp encounter in Dark Souls (2), where I had received a red orb in exchange for one of the many smooth and silky stones I had earned as a loyal shade. So naturally I decided to give a whirl, I seem to be able to handle myself better than most players I've played with around my level/area.

So I go to one of the more beginner/medium ish areas where my combat skills are still reasonably tested and invade someone's world. For some time I skulked around the area, waiting to get the drop on my victim, but none of the enemies had been killed, so they couldn't be far from the bonfire. Clearly they're waiting for me, so I'm cautiously peeking around every corner before going but I'm getting a little restless as I exhaust hiding spots.

Obviously this is a scenario more familiar to my victim than myself and as I walked up some stairs he slammed me in the back of the head with a fucking mace and threw some magic glitter in my face. As a knight with some heavy early game equipment investment I was not having any of it and manage to back him down the stairs until we're having the most absurd 45 second stalemate of backstepping, combat rolls and prissy bags of dust.

Eventually his faster build managed to turn the tables on my sluggish broadsword strokes, and I turned to run. No time for estus, no time for life gems. I hop down a ladder JUST as he slams his sword on the top but barely misses me. I've managed to get behind a large amount of enemies now so he won't be able to give chase fast enough to get any finishing blow on me. With no apparent way to heal myself and with him lying in wait for a simple one shot to finish the job, I formally banished myself from his world and conceded defeat. I didn't think of this later (and I still don't know what the case is) but I hope that because I left his world it doesn't cheat him out of the bonus for defeating an invader, which I thought was kind of weird for a PVP scenario. I can't remember many times in a game where I'd actually feel bad if my enemy got cheated out of something because of my choice of convenience.
