I see your point! I should've made an aside for things like this. Probably my favorite (and most consistent) game series of all times is the Soulsborne games! That's the best bit about games, they don't need conventional stories/characters to convey tone and atmosphere. Bloodborne is the best cosmic horror media since Lovecraft himself, in my opinion. I totally get what you're saying and I think discussing RPGs on their own merits can create really meaningful discussions about how well the complex game systems tie in with the setting, NPCs and overall "feeling" the game gives. To me, Soulsborne games are like David Lynch films -- I have no idea what's happening but I love it haha they both can be very dreamlike (looking at you Eraserhead).
