So I absolutely love buying dumb T-Shirts (I have one with a kitten riding a popsicle in space thanks Walmart) but I got curious about the legality of it all because you’re technically using someone else’s work. So what’s the deal? They’re on Amazon, EBay etc. how does this work?

[Michigan/USA] I'm curious how the laws work related to using graphics of popular TV cartoons on stickers and selling them online.

I was shown a Facebook ad a while back to buy some Rick and Morty stickers (popular cartoon) from a random website online. I just got them today and now I'm thinking... Why couldn't I do something like this?

Is what this person did illegal? I wouldn't really want to do something like this if it were. Is this allowable to use another well established cartoons characters and sell printed stickers for money? What about other brands or illustrations?

Appreciate any general advice on the subject here. It seems like a good enough Facebook ad at the right time could definitely generate a bit of side money.
