Tech firms slowly moving into Calgary’s hollowed out downtown core

Calgary is essentially the opposite of that though.

I forget the exact number, but the city annexes surrounding land (Rocky View County) to maintain a couple of decades of inventory for new suburb development. This is why Greater Calgary is essentially synonymous with Calgary, unlike a GVA or GTA that is comprised up of many cities. There is development happening in just about every direction with the exception of the southwest where the city butts up against the Tsuu T'ina nation.

On top of this, in the beltline developers are free to construct high rise condos without height restriction. There are plenty of condos going up - Calgary regularly sits in the top 5 cities in North America for tower cranes, with 32 in the city as of q3 2021.

Last, the city is trying to push through a new development plan that would see the majority of the city rezoned to, at a minimum, 3 story developments.

So the city is building out, up, and filling in.
