How bad was the sound in Steel Yard last year?

I go to this venue semi often for parties in other genres of music.

It's shit. It wasn't built to be a club... It was a steel yard (!)

The bass is accentuated by the way the room is built. It's a gigantic bass trap. No acoustic treatment at all.

I've seen three different promoters throw parties there:

  • One had a sound engineer on the floor all night... Tweaking the sound every time a new act came on, and even mid set. Walking around checking pockets of the dancefloor, reducing the bass, highlighting the mids as best possible, and making each act sound the best they can. I give the sound that night 7/10.
  • Both other promoters didn't care. They just put speakers in and let the crowd suffer. The bass is so dominant you lose a huge amount of the subtle melodies, and even the dominant ones don't feel right when a bassline is present. It's only the few times the kick and bass drops out of a track that a melody shines.

It's a challenging room to start with, to do it properly over a night takes a dedicated focus on sound.... Which very few promoters have. Even if you love Prydz and must go to this, don't get your hopes up for the experience.
