How good were past Championship top scorers

Well that's certainly an interesting take, but I can understand why getting a player from a league where 2/3rds of the players who come up score more than our main striker did would worry you (10 out of the 16 players who came up scored 6 or more goals) and half got as many or more as our top scorer this season (8+ goals)

It's also a little unfair leaving out how many minutes they played, as it changes it dramtically; out of the top scorerers from the 2018/19 season that you've mentioned 3 played less than 1,140 Minutes (1/3rd of the season) due to being backup players for their teams (Gayle {849 Mins} , Sharp {1048 Mins} and Adams {1107 Mins} ) while one was due to being a Jan signing for a struggling team (Bowen {992 Mins} ) so that 4 of the 9 players already, and all of the ones who scored less than Wesley accounted for.

Of the remaining 5, 3 played less than 2,280 mins (2/3rds of the season) Tammy (2,221,mins), McBurnie (2,121) and Rodriguez (2,011) all of which played at least over a 1,000 more minutes in the Championship season before. McBurnie and Rodriguez played in defensive first teams only having 116 shots between them (50 McBurnie, 76 Rodriguez) Danny Ings had 93 Shots on his own (and this isn't taking xG and the quality of shots into account)

It's the same with Pukki and Maupay, who despite being the only players on the list to play more than 2/3rds of the season in the PL still played over a 1,000 more mins in the Championship and arguably are the only 2 that are the main Goalscoring threat for their teams. And these are players who have come from teams used to having a lot of the ball a situation they're not going to be in a lot in the Prem. Despite this out of the 61 Forwards to play in the Prem this season (according to WhoScored) they were the 11th and 14th highest scorers respectively, which certainly isn't awful for a first season in the PL.

So yeah, it's hard to judge whether a top scorer can do it in the PL, but it's difficult to judge how any striker is going to translate to a new league and a new style of play, but more often than not the one's who get game time tend to be competent forwards and do okay for their teams; even if they don't set the league on fire
