How should a game with mature themes tell its story through the gameplay? Should the game be more explicit and uncensored?

I'm not sure if love portrayed accurately would automatically be bad for stories. The way it's portrayed now, sure. But that's not a specific problem with the medium.

Commander shepherd sacrificing a Vega and varus for an Ashley is realistic. And it should complicate matters. The problem in my mind is that on screen sex gets tied to romance. If I sacrifice Vega and varus because my Ashley needs help, that's one thing. If it's leads to us banging later, it's unnecessary, unrealistic, and typically leads to some success meter for no real reason. We should take the hit as a road block in the mission and our relation, not accept that it's a set back but hey, at least I chose Ashley. Fuck that, Ashley should be up in arms and confused- I killed her friends because reasons. Noble ones if you look at it one way, awful ones in another

So thats my big problem with all this. Games offer up romance but give no reason to treat it as anything more that 'i like you, let's bang repeatedly'. And that isn't romance. Goosebumps could do it better
