Inspiring good-girl

Okay, I’ve been wanting to say this on Reddit for a while. It’s not pretty.

My niece went to a top vet school in the US, then did her residency in internal medicine at another great hospital. The horror stories she’s told me of the incompetence of her fellow students and general vets is terrifying. She’s told me that she wouldn’t even trust some of alumni to do a basic exam on her own pets.

I know firsthand how even caring, fairly competent care by local vets can almost lead to serious complications or death of my pets; thankfully my niece with her connections was able to get my pets top notch care and save their lives. If I didn’t have her, I would’ve assumed it was just bad luck that killed them — an illness or injury that couldn’t be helped... because that’s literally almost what happened. The emergency vet missing a degloving injury in one of my cats is something my wife still brings up frequently years later. Even last year a local vet screwed up minor surgery on my cat and gave him a cauliflower ear which could’ve been avoided with proper suturing.

I support veterinarians and think it’s criminal how little we care about our pets. But the state of general practice is scary sometimes.
