Je Suis Superhero | SFFS - Apparently a movie on the Sikh Captain America Vishavjit Singh

And Eileen Kaur too - the creator of SuperSikh comics.

Looking forward to this!

A slim, lanky, turbaned and bearded man in his late 30s is shown on screen (Vish); followed by an Anglo American woman (Eileen) who is driving her two teenage kids to school; finally an African American guy in a hat (Keith) appears on screen. Can any or all of these be superheroes? The answer depends on how we perceive them.

A closer look at their journey reveals that each of them suffered from being stereotyped. We look at how Vish, born in US as a Sikh,w as always called various names — Osama, rag head, towel head — because of his appearance. Eileen, even though she is Anglo American, was still considered an outsider and typecast because of her gender. After becoming a mom people just wrote her off as they thought she had lost her cool factor. Keith grew up in a rap music era, but his talent was not seen and respected because of his "black skin color."

One tragic event in each of these three characters life changed their thought process. They each decided to take on stereotypes head on not just in their personal life but also through their work. Vish became an editorial cartoonist, Eileen started a rock band and later created the first Sikh Superhero and Keith started 3 comic strips and started talking about racism and stereotypes not just in US but across the world.

The story culminates with an analysis provided by experts including a comic book curators, media producer and a university professor who talk about the impact of these artists' work and how they are changing the way people think about stereotyping and other social issues. The backdrop of comic books and cartoons lends humor and creates a fun and easy going pace for an otherwise serious documentary.
