I think it’s primarily the NPR soy latte privileged (mostly white) types of people that push that narrative the hardest. People the least likely to know anything about guns and also the least likely to be victims of gun violence. I agree that exact narrative isn’t common amongst most people, but that narrative has significant corporate media presence so that narrative does get regurgitated. I find it’s a very easy argument to flip, though. You just ask them “Why would you want to empower a system that is murdering black, brown & poor with no impunity, with the ability to disarm people? Who do you think that will hurt the most?” Their woke wires get crossed pretty easy. For them it’s “black square on my social media day” or “anti-gun day”. Whatever reactionary signal they need to help themselves feel better. It’s all paper thin.
