I don't think the stated goals of either are necessarily ridiculous. What's ridiculous is co-opting tragedies to push through your agenda. "What happened here today is a national tragedy, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families—which is why we need all your support to push through this 300-page piece of legislation to ban guns and defeat the evil Republicans and protect people from gun violence" is just as ridiculous as "What happened here today is a national tragedy, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families—which is why we need all your support to push through this 300-page piece of legislation to put guns in the hands of every mand, woman, and child to defeat the evil Democrats and protect people from gun violence."
