Do I Need Snow Chains?

Most years we only have like 3 days of actual snowy roads. Some years it's zero days, occasionally it's as long as a week. The roads are a shitshow the whole time because 1. it's hilly, 2. we don't salt because the salt runs off into the sound and that's bad, 3. it doesn't snow often enough for us to have a lot of plows so plowing is S L O W, and 4. the temps tend to hover right around freezing so the snow partially melts and then refreezes so the snow is not the problem, the layer of ice UNDER the snow is the problem.

If it is at all humanly possible, do not drive for that period when the roads are crap. If you can work from home, work from home. If you can walk or take the bus, do that (but leave extra time because the bus schedule will be fucked). If you can't, seriously consider calling out. A lot of places close early or don't open at all because it's so hard for employees to get around when there's snow on the roads.

I've never bothered to get chains because even if I had chains or snow tires and was great at driving in snow (which I am NOT), most people on the road are overconfident and have no idea what they're doing, so everyone else is still a complete menace. Watching cars slide backwards down hills is a traditional snow day entertainment here.

It's a really A+ time to sit inside with a hot drink and feel sorry for whoever went outside.
