Similar to Ky, May doesn't do anything laura-like; slow dolphin is reactable, ball doesn't get you too much approach (compare to Laura lv2 fireball,) and otherwise her gameplan is 'gorilla you with giant damage normals with large hitboxes' which isn't so much a Laura gameplan but an Urien or Balrog one
Yeah she's got a command grab, but the wincon off that isn't like Laura's "hold this frame advantage i'm about to blender you", it's more like "i got you in the corner, now hold this damage", and Sol does that better and with more stability for the perspective of new player
Also with respect to her movement, her ball and dolphin both kinda lock down her options? Leo can move independent of the fireball like Laura, Ball is pretty easy to jump and ignore and you don't get a lot of time to move during its cover. Additionally, a lot of May's game is in the air because of how great her air normals are (which isn't something that'll be so familiar to Laura players)
You can make the argument that Nago is also 'gorilla you with big normals' but because of the way he special cancels, I think he's closer to the Laura archetype; his clone works like her fireball (in that he can approach behind it), he has the frametrap game, he has the mixup game (except it's near/far instead of left/right) and he has the same kind of 'momentum install' she does - just like Laura, if Nago is hitting you, you're in serious trouble
