Are Chipp players disproportionately on wifi?

200ms shouldn't happen if a south american chipp is on the south american servers. That's the latency if you're going from the bottom of south america all the way to the US.

So if you're on south america and your opponent has around 200ms, that's about how far from you he is. In theory he could be somewhere else that's within that radius, but the Internet doesn't work through straight lines - anywhere that'd be closer to South America but isn't in South America should still be routing through the US, so it'd be considerably higher than 200ms if that's where they'd be.

There are a few explanations for 200ms:

  • He picked South America despite being NA. Since there's no population benefit to this, it must be intentional.

  • He's south american, but is using a very bad VPN. Since this must be intentional on his part, he's kind of an ass.

  • He's south american, but his ISP is routing him through Guatemala. This is probably not intentional on his part, but he's kind of an ass for not fixing it before going online.

It can't be his phone's 4G, or 200ms would be far too low. It also can't just be attributed to wi-fi, as wi-fi causes spikes of latency, the overall increase from wi-fi is tiny (~5-15ms).

All in all, if you're facing someone with 200ms, you can safely assume they're doing it on purpose. It's a bit more understandable when people from low population regions go to high population regions - like everyone congregating on East Coast - but it really makes no sense for someone to go from the populated region into the region with less players.
