A New Flame

Charlie has been doing something he thought he never would do in his life. He was reading a book. Not just one, he had quite a few books next to him as he read them. He may as well have read them. For how much the books had costed him. A few weeks back he was coming back from a job when he stopped by a bookstore. He didn’t really read, but he lose a bet with his sister. So he had to keep up his end of the bet and read some books. He was told that this books were related to fire magic, but a very special type. He wasn’t the brightest person around, so he feel for the merchant’s words. He ended up buying all four of the books. He had to make sure to cut down on his food habits until he did another job. He reads through the books. He has been studying these books for the last month. The first two didn't seem anything out of the ordinary. Just stuff about fire magic which was always helpful. He learned a spell from these books. The last two books were a bit more interesting. It was about fire magic. Though the properties of this fire were significantly different from the fire he knew how to wield. If he was able to learn how to use this magic, his level in skill would increase. He took the books to the training ground with him. He read each part carefully. It was a bit confusing when he first read it. He had to reread a couple of the chapters over again, to make sure he didn’t screw anything up. All of this stuff was boring to him. He knew it was important to read, but there was no demonstrations on how to use this fire yet. He leaves the training grounds and heads home. He stayed up all night reading the book over and over again. He fell asleep and on a table in the guild hall the next day. The books on the table with him. Cassie, his younger sister zapped him to wake him up. He jumped up and fell out of his seat. He squints at his sister. "What gives Cass?" He said to her. She rolls her eyes and sits down with two plates of food. Pushing one in front of him. He gets up and starts to eat the meal. "If you weren't up all night you wouldn't be tired. We're supposed to train today. Yet you're knocked out in the table." She said a bit annoyed at him. "I know I know, I didn't forget. We will train today. I was just taking a nap. All of that reading wore me out." Charlie said to her. She eyes the books. "Those books I made you buy? You already read most of them, why're still going?" She asked him. He shows her the cover of one book. Then flips through some pages for her to read. She takes the book and skims through the pages. "This book is cool. It talks about fire, but not the one I use." He said. She reads some of the text in the book. "What type of fire is this? It doesn't sound like rainbow or purple flare magic." Cassie said. She closed the book and slid it back to her brother. "I know. It's a completely different kind. Don't you see what will happen if I learn? I'll get stronger. More magic at my display. I've gotten a bit stronger since we got here. Maybe I'm ready to use two types of magic now." He said then ate some more. She thinks to herself. He made some good points. Though she still had her doubts. Not about her brother, but more so on the magic. "I don't know. How do you know you can even obtain this magic. The description for it, makes it almost sound like it doesn't exist." Cassie said He just gives her a smile. "That's the fun part. I don't know if it's real. The fun part is finding out if it's true or not." He said. She just sighs and takes a sip of her drink. "It's not fun. You're just dumb. Though I'll support your decision. I'll help in any way I can. But only after we train." She said to him. He chuckles for a few seconds. "Sure of course. We'll head to the training ground right after we eat. I promise." He said to her. She nods, hoping he keeps his word and they eat and chat for another hour or so.

After training with his sister, he decided to stay on the training grounds for a bit longer. He opens up the book and reads some more. He thought he was far enough in the book to try and give a first attempt at the magic. After taking one last look at the text in the book he closes it. He then holds his hand out, ready to try it out. ”Here goes nothing.” He tries to conjure fire. Only regular fire appeared in his hand. He waved it away and tried again. Yet again normal fire showed up. He repeated this over for the next twenty minutes. He stopped to regain his energy. He was draining his magic power. He looks at the book again to see what he was doing wrong. “One must be clouded with negativity…” He read aloud. Now he wasn’t a negative person. In fact he was probably one of the most upbeat people one would ever meet. He thought for a moment, of a how to get around this. Just how strong was this magic? After a couple of minutes of thinking, he gets up ready to try something. He closed his eyes and held is hand out in front of him. Images ran through his head. He saw his sister, the only family he had in this world. He thought about what would happen to her if he was unable to be there for her. If something happened because of him. He started to get angry. Anger at himself. He could feel his blood boiling. He never wanted to have something happen to Cassie, especially because he was too stupid to help out. While he was in the middle of his internal rage, he tried to conjure up fire. He felt the fire wanted to appear, but it wouldn’t. Was it his energy? He know he was almost at his limit, but surely he had at least enough power let for one more fireball. He pushes his power to the max. ”Come on!” A small flame conjured in his hand. He kept pushing until he felt a decent sized flame in his hand. Charlie opens his hand to see fire. "The fire. It's so dark." He said He was holding the dark flame in his hand. The flame was smaller than the ones he conjures from his regular fire. It was clearly a different type of fire, excluding the color. The flame seemed to have been wrapped around his hand. It didn't burn him either. He was so shocked he exhausted he flame accidentally. "No!" He tries to repeat what he did to make another flame. It took a while, but he managed to another flame on his hand. He grins in excitement. "So cool!" He tries to throw the fire like he normally did. When he threw the fire, he noticed it was quite stronger than his original one. It was stronger, but also harder to control. He concentrates to extinguish the fire. He goes over to the book and skims to the last chapter. "Dark...Regulus? I don't quite get the name." Charlie closes the book and picks there rest up. He was pretty tired. All of the stuff he did exhausted him. He was going home feeling accomplished. He had successfully learned how to at least conjure up the magic. That was the first step.

{Charlie can now use Dark Regulus magic.}
