[Serious] "I'm busy for the next couple weeks. Maybe we can meet up after my other commitments" What are your thoughts on this? (description included)

I connected with a guy online, we texted for a week and had things in common, so we met in person once. He said he had a wonderful time and would love to see me again. We texted for a couple days, and I tried to set a time to meet again (we're both in different cities that are relatively close -- so it's not the most convenient match, but not impossible). After mentioning he make his way down my way (I went to his area when we first met), he texted a version of the quote in the title.

Now to me, this sounds like a great way to end it with someone who is essentially a stranger. The thing is I really had an immediate connection and strong attraction to this guy, and I'm an eager beaver when it comes to getting to know a guy better I'm attracted to. My friends are telling me it's over and to NOT text him (I sent the last message a week ago now) because I would look desperate. Honestly, I just want to get to know the guy better, but don't want to turn him off to me completely if he was trying to gently push me away with that text.
