"Oh man, nice car - wish I could get one like that"

Agree whole heartedly. You can take that philosophy even further: get a motorcycle for the 90% of the time you're commuting by yourself (the right hard cases and a backpack are more than enough space for most people's daily needs). The amount of time and money you save not sitting in traffic or fighting for parking will blow your mind, and you'll suddenly find yourself looking forward to the daily commute. Then the sports coupe becomes the "practical" vehicle for bad weather, dates, and groceries.

Econoboxs' "practicality" really just means being mediocre at everything, imo. When you actually need to carry furniture or something, they're usually too small and you need a truck or van anyway. Plus the gas mileage benefits have pretty much leveled out in the last 5 years. Really, unless you're carrying 4 other people around everyday, there's no point. And if that were the case, most 5 seaters are uncomfortably cramped in the rear anyway and you'd probably wish you had a van or an SUV after about a week of it.
