Surfing: annual gear cost, practically nothing unless you surf gnarly shit and break boards often. A brand new board goes for $400-900, and if that’s well taken care of can last years on years. The ocean is free

Guitar: I started playing 7 years ago. I bought my first and only acoustic for $200, never spent a dime on lessons. Got a mid ranged electric and amp 6 years ago, for $550 and $450 respectively. Got some pedals and a nicer amp last year for about $1000 total. All that gear will last a lifetime. In 7 years I spent $2200 for a hobby that I can do whenever I want for free for the rest of my life.
