I hope the majority of people would wish everyone was alert and cautious when behind the wheel but unfortunately we have a lot of things that distract our drivers. Cell phones, alcohol & drug abuse, loud stereos, pets etc. Basic parenting should include teaching your child to look both ways prior to crossing the street, utilizing sidewalks where available and the need to be aware of their surroundings. Kids and parents have the freedom to educate themselves on keeping themselves safe yet many chose not to do so. Drive through Anchorage neighborhoods before or after school and you will be amazed at the number of children who walk right in the middle of the street, that is their choice.
