[pubQ] Proper way to leave your literary agent?

It’s very difficult to be anonymous so I’ll do my best here.

I do not write novels. I write non-fiction.

Got the agent from a query. Agent read first manuscript, put it on sub. We had a deal right away, and the book was released and did fairly well.

Around the time the first book was being published I let the agent know I had a second book. Agent said she would put it on sub. Agent never asked for the ms, and didn’t do anything, and I was busy with the book release.

Finally after much follow up, the agent put the book on sub (over a year later). The book sold and I delivered the ms to the editor. The agent never read the book.

There are a number of foibles that I won’t go into to keep anonymous but I just don’t feel this agent is working on my behalf. (Brings me ideas that don’t align, forgets conversations we’ve had…)

Now I have another book nearly ready to go.

I do not want to work with this agent on any more projects. I think this agent is wonderful in many respects but doesn’t have the tenacity or grit I would prefer.

We are getting into the weeds here, but my initial question was: do I end this relationship now, or after the next book (book 2) comes out?
