We’re members of the Pitt Grad Student Organizing Committee! Ask Us Anything about unionization (again), and see our response to a misleading email from the administration.

That the whole thing will end up being a waste of time and resources for not much gain.

I consider myself to be working on my career so I don’t mind being considered a graduate student worker but you have to admit that academia is far different from industry.

Each individual professor is far more like an individual enterprise than a collective that can be bargained with. It seems to me like the union has goals to regulate the academics and professors with broad strokes policies.

It seems to me like bargained changes that every professor can actually meet will be small. At the same time the massive benefits promised may be impossible for every professor to meet. Sure it could work out fine or we could end up with a ton of red tape for not a lot of gain.

As someone who doesn’t really experience these grievances, I’m not convinced that the improvements are going to be worth the costs.

If we were allowed to opt out I’d say go for it but unfortunately that isn’t the case.
