The Real Knockouts of Women’s Boxing - Even the sport’s reigning champions have trouble making a living without turning themselves into sex symbols.

People don't want to watch women's boxing because it's just not as good

I don't doubt that the vast majority of folks are not misogynists, but this is the line of thought that's troubling: Is this perceived lack of quality the result of women being inherently incapable of being as skilled as men, or simply the result of the current stock of female fighters lacking the talent?

To consciously avoid watching women box because of the former would be misogyny, surely, but the latter is a solvable problem: Find better female fighters. But as it stands, the world of women's professional boxing is so small, and it will never grow with women not allowed to box more than 10 rounds with each round lasting only 2 minutes. What woman would want to enter a prize-fighting ring when there is seemingly no prize at all to be won -- Even though women spar competitively with men all the time in gyms around the world, why would they try to go pro in a place where marginalization of the gender is so ingrained into the sport itself?

In Jack Johnson's day, there were thousands of black fighters that were perfectly content to stay behind the color line, fighting only other black fighters for scraps compared to the fortunes white fighters were making. It wasn't until Johnson's meteoric rise and undeniable talent and skill that people on all sides clamored for Jeffries to break the color line and accept Johnson's challenge -- Should we have to wait for a similarly talented female to rise before treating all women as competitive equals in the sport?

I believe if women were afforded the same opportunities as men to be successful in the sport, we would have no difficulty finding a new generation of women champions. Hell, I think if women were allowed to fight men especially in the lower weight classes, you'd really find the hungry young lionesses eager to prove themselves amongst the lions.
