Redditors who wrote a serial killer, what did you write about? Did you get a response back?

I’ve corresponded with a handful over the years and only keep in touch with 2 currently. Truth be told, most get super boring after a while haha. I talk to 1 a few times a week on the phone and would consider him a friend. We visit at his unit, mail things back and forth, speak on the phone a lot, etc. A little bizarre to most, but I enjoy our conversations and have had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with a bunch of people who have been involved in his life up until this point. Including family! It can be very rewarding/enlightening. The best advice I can give is to do a lot of research on who you’re going to write and really think about why, and what you want to get out of it. Just writing to say “hey” probably won’t get a response. They get tons and tons of mail, but most actually read every letter they receive. Whether or not they’re compelled to write back is a different story. You have to put it in perspective: if someone has been locked up for a long time, you can imagine the number of letters they get from “groupies” and people just seeking their correspondence to sell online. Some SKs are actually very wary of faux-pen pals. The other SK I speak with (Kraft) refuses to speak to what he calls murder groupies. If you really want to write Hendy, do some research and find something in common and just introduce yourself. Write a lengthy letter that portrays who you are as a person and explain your motivation for writing. The more personal and authentic, the better. EDIT: I relayed your inquiry to a SK I just spoke with on the telephone 20 mins ago and he said this: “It’s always a good thing to find genuine friends in the free world. Being locked up for a long time, you run out of things to talk about with those around you. We enjoy any mail we get and it’s fun meeting new people.” However, he did say inmates and cons are aware of murderbilia pages and if they have a problem with being sold for profit that “they aren’t receiving,” then they will not write back. You can get lucky and correspond with someone who doesn’t need the profit, or you get mixed up with someone who will exploit you in the end. Whether it’s giving your photos or address to another cellie…just be careful. He says, “Always be cautious. We’re actually not all the same.” Hope that helps! Good luck and be safe!
