Retail workers of Reddit who caught someone shoplifting in your store, what went down?

Back in my teens I was working at the candy-counter of a movie-theater, to help out the "candy-girls"--yes, that's what we called them back then: it was the 80's... dang I'm getting old!

I was an usher, and was the only male usher willing to go back there and help them out during rushes. I don't know why the other guys didn't want to back and help, but personally, I was more than happy and eager to "work with a bunch of girls" as they say!

I also found it kind of fast paced and fun back there during rushes and had a lot of energy in those days.

Anyways... during the "big rush" in between movie starts, I spotted a younger teen-kid swipe a Kit Kat from the stack, and start to walk away briskly.

So I called out, "Dude!" and right away, despite the big crowd he turned around and knew immediately I was calling him! As he looked at me, I kinda smiled and motioned for him to come back.

He then kinda reluctantly sauntered back, and so I leaned over the counter and said, "Aren't you forgetting something?"

And he said something to the effect of, "Sorry... uhh... I don't have enough money. I think I accidentally took this and forgot to pay. I'll just put it back."

Then I said, "Well, now you've got enough!" and I took a buck from our shared tip-tray for all the girls and me, and tossed it into the cash.

He just looked confused, and I lectured him slightly saying something like, "But don't do that again! Anyone else in here catches you and they'll actually call the cops. You don't want trouble with cops do you? It isn't worth it."

He just turned red faced then quickly marched to his movie theater and ducked inside.

ANOTHER TIME...

at University, I was invigilating an exam to make a few extra bucks, and I spotted 2 people towards the back obviously conferring with each other, and passing some kind of information back and fourth.

So I just cleared my throat loudly... they looked right at me, saw me looking right at that them... and kinda froze like deer caught in the headlights!

I just shook my head in a "no" gesture, then they looked back down at their exams, and there was no more of that between them for the rest of the exam!

(I hope they passed?)

So ya... those were the only 2 times I caught people doing some "minor" thieving or cheating... thankfully. Otherwise, most people seem very honest, in my experience... for the most part.
