Reverse engineering the cheating VW electronic control unit

For someone who has actually reverse engineered OBDII ECUs, I find this article to be completely full of it. Anyone who uses the terms like 0-day and "the code is not the same, but close enough" is nothing but a wannabe script kiddy that wrote some fiction in order to get recognized in his/her group. Anyone can logically guess on how an ECU can determine a rolling road (dyno) situation. A simple one is the lack of the rear wheels (or front wheels in a rear driven car) turning and VSS sensors triggering the loop. That would be one line of code.

That, and this argument aims directly towards malice, which is the obvious intent of VW and others. Maybe one can explain to me why the US is saturated in gasoline cars that get half the mileage a diesel can. Maybe one can explain why Europe isn't so tied to the same regulatory base. Maybe one can tell me why diesel trucks are exempt from these numbers and the synthetic urine injection cycles.

VW did it because they knew the American public was not going to go through the hassle of buying another form of fuel to run their diesel cars. They knew through market research that people have no clue how or when to change their oil, coolant, brake fluid, and even noticed that some would get fooled into exhaust bearing and blinker fluid maintenance. It's why a large percentage of car maintenance is a scam in the US. The American public (which includes our politicians) are clueless about automobiles, the number 1 item most used in this country. So excuse me for going on a rant about diesel regulations while people don't even realize that purchasing a Prius sets them way back compared to these diesel cars due to the battery creating and future battery waste. Sometimes I wonder if people seriously live in La-La land in this country. Seriously American, wake the fuck up.
