Shibari is not necessarily sexual as in directly related to intercourse, BDSM isn't either, its more about power dynamics than sex, they are intimate but they can also be public. Shibari comes from Japan's police and how they used to tie people where it would restrain someone and not leave permanent injuries, then it evolved into erotism and a more artistic approach on the designs.

People tend to relate "sexual" with sex, and might be what they were talking, and in that sense, I can assure you, a great part of shibari as well as many BDSM practices don't involve sex, you're just coming out like someone that doesn't know about the topic at all but wants to be right.
