Sorry to ask but what exactly is Democracy? Description provided

Thanks for coming by. So basically I'm trying to ask what democracy is like in NZ? along this, I want to know how the NZ government democracy works like the process etc. Like Democracy is when people meet to decide about new laws, and changes to existing ones. people elect their leaders. These leaders take this decision about laws. Who are these people? is it us/we? also, who are the leaders being elected? is it the leaders of each individual political partys?

In New Zealand we have "Political parties" and in each party, they have a leader to represent them. Are the leaders in the political parties the representatives? confusing sorry..
