[spoilers] Let's discuss episode 1 of The Island with Bear Grylls

For reality television entertainment, I liked this show. I found myself yelling at the screen multiple times — like when they broke every knife safety rule, when they mixed the salt water with their potable water, etc. — and I found that frustration to be pretty entertaining.

Most of the participants were refreshingly inept, so there is little mistaking this for an educational show — a major problem with Grylls' other shows. There didn't seem to be any standard reality TV "odd couple forced to work together" tropes, something that I find really forced and hackneyed. There also wasn't any sort of gamification, no voting off the island, etc.

The participants are also the camera operators instead of having a crew, like on Survivorman, which helps give the show a sense of danger, which increases its entertainment value.

Also like Survivorman, they seem to spend nights on the island instead of heading to the comfort of tents, cots, sleeping bags, or even hotels as other survival TV hosts often do. This allows us to see how they cope with shoddy shelters, scary noises, and unforeseen weather at night.

Bear Grylls is barely present in the show, only showing up during the bumpers. He (so far) has just given very basic survival advice sort of like Dual Survival's "Art of Self Reliance" bumpers. So no pee drinking, no swinging on vines, no wrestling animals...yet. He seems to just be the host so far, and is fine in that role.

Also the most irritating person on the show has already been removed from the island, which can only make the show better. He was incredibly irritating — like screaming kid from The Babadook irritating.

So far, I think this show has potential, but only as entertainment. It reminded me of Out of the Wild, but not as good. I'll probably watch a few more episodes.
