[Spoilers] People in the Keep basement

My pet theory is that the keep represents a state of being tangled up in pursuits that don't ultimately lead to the betterment of self. People here either willingly, or due to circumstance, avoid changing the status quo and live out their lives missing a higher purpose.

We see the king in power, the queen admiring a shiny bauble, two fencers in battle for the king. There's a young couple hoping to enter the well-guarded courtyard of the elite. The secret service agents carry swords to remind us that this isn't a medieval scene or a modern one. It's a scene that spans ages.

Outside this area are the dregs. Poor people in the basement, a man working at an office desk. A cleric gathering gold from these people.

The poor man dragging heavy baggage is accompanied by an audio log which says:

"If a man, holding a belief which he was taught in childhood or persuaded of afterwards, keeps down and pushes away any doubts which arise about it in his mind...the life of that man is one long sin against mankind."

This man refuses to dump his (religious?) baggage and is stuck trudging through a castle that keeps him walled in and "safe". He may or may not arrive in the courtyard, but will he ever step outside to see the beautiful flowers? It seems unthinkable that he would make it ac ross the river to the Monastery carrying those.

The player is stuck down in a maze of all this like everyone else. However, there is hope that one can rise above and take an outside view of the whole situation. See the rich and the poor, the struggles for power and wealth and, in the end, learn from them.

Also, we get a Rabindranath Tagore poem near a guitar player, which makes me think of an artist with a message in his work and the people around want him to tell them what it means. They want an easy answer. The poet remains coy and, in a way, even the work itself remains coy.

Tagore was an extraordinarily accomplished artist. Ot once, it seems like this area reminds the player to not get lost in a maze of empty pursuits. Pay attention to art around you and don't look for easy answers. If you are making art (and I think this game thinks you should be) don't waste too much time with people who don't care to engage with your work. In doing so you will be bettering yourself.
