Stimulus Package Thoughts, Politics

He’s one of the good ones!

I don’t doubt some folks stopped looking for alternative employment while receiving the large unemployment checks but obviously they aren’t layabouts. They had to be employed in the first place to be eligible for the payment, right? I do think adjustments should be made taking into account cost of living, many should not be getting the full $600. However, right now the more money put back into the economy the better and some folks getting a temporary windfall to aid in staving off or at least lessening the damage of what could be the worst economic crisis in our history would be completely worthwhile. These payments could benefit all Americans in the long run. Jerome Powell made bold statements in May saying “There is a growing sense that the recovery may come more slowly than we would like,” he said May 13, “and that may mean that it’s necessary for us to do more.” The government may need to keep workers and businesses on life support for “three or six more months.” Then in June he told Congress “It would be a concern if Congress were to pull back from the support that it’s providing too quickly,” following that by saying “It would be wise to look at ways to continue to support people who are out of work and also smaller businesses that may not have vast resources for a period of time…so that we can get through this critical phase,” he said. “That support would be well placed at this time.”

Both Republicans and Democrats should be looking at the big picture not focusing on short sighted small victories. Republicans seem worried about 3 trillion in debt instead of the decade or more of possible economic collapse and the associated issues. While it seems the Democrats are too worried about solving all the problems at once and not prioritizing the issues.

The Democrats, to their credit, do seem willing to negotiate, offering a middle ground of 2 trillion down from their original 3 which was still rejected by the Republicans who proposed 1 trillion and refused compromise.

I fear we are at an impasse and absolutely nothing would compel some men to remove the knots from a bound opponents hands. Even if to gain freedom ones rival must undo a single knot tied in a rope constricting both men’s necks with a single noose. For some, mutually assured destruction is preferable to an outsider gaining an inch of ground. No earthly thing might grant some men the clarity of foresight to allow a contribution be made in a humanitarian spirit towards a fellow American who’s view may differ from their own. For some however, even mutually assured destruction wouldn’t grant the ability of foresight or humanitarianism toward a fellow American of differing views.
