I was taught to tighten lug nuts with an impact wrench among other suspicious things, am I being trained wrong?

Being a trainee is a lot of yes sir no sir and re-teaching yourself the right way to do things when your on your own. It's tough. It's also a lot about finesse and knowing what not to do and saying you did it that way when your asked. Get a decent torque stick (not fron harbor freight) the ones you can stick a socket on, 1 for 30.5 meters lbs and 1 for like 45.7 meters lbs and that should cover most vehicles you will work on. And it never hurts to double check it with a torque wrench. Never sacrifice quality of work for speed. You will only lose in the end.
