Teams most likely to challenge Warriors for Harrison Barnes.

Just to preface this: I don’t watch a lot of NBA games outside of the Warriors. My opinion on players is based off of preexisting knowledge/bias, news I’ve heard about them, what I’ve seen of their play so far, and /r/nba. I just did this for fun, because I believe no one would really care much about this. However, if a lot of you do find this interesting and would want a more accurate/detailed idea of who would compete for Harrison, let me know and I will put much more research into this, like ask around other teams’ subedits to get their general opinions. Thanks.

Team SF Need Key FA Cap Space
Clippers Priority Moute? $8 mil max
Grizzlies Possible Conley $38 mil max
Hawks Unlikely Horford $34 mil max
Lakers Priority Clarkson $62 mil max
Mavericks Unlikely Nowitzki $48 mil max
Nets Priority Ellington $38 mil max
Pelicans Possible Gee $22 mil max
Timberwolves Possible Prince $28 mil max
Trailblazers High Crabbe? $41 mil max

Atlanta Hawks Analysis: Horford should definitely be a priority for Atlanta and I am certain they will retain him at all costs. Baze I think will also be re-signed, as he is serviceable and cheaper than HB.

Brooklyn Nets Analysis: Nets are probably the team I know the least about on this list. My assumption is that they will move forward with Brook Lopez as the centerpiece of their roster. I think Thaddeus Young will remain a starter as well. This leaves question marks at the other three positions. Apparently Jarrett Jack doesn’t play as well as he does against the Warriors so a starting PG might be a priority. The other two current starters who are out of contract are Wayne Ellington and Joe Johnson. Apparently Ellington has been playing well and he does have a Player Option so I assume he re-signs and potentially starts next season. This leaves Joe Johnson, who I am sure won’t be brought back so SF will become the biggest need

Dallas Mavericks Analysis: I’m really unsure about the Mavericks. 4 of their starting 5 will be out of contract, but three of them have player options. They will probably re-sign Zaza. Dirk I think will either accept his PO or retire. Deron and Parsons will probably come back, but if Parsons then they might go for HB.

Los Angeles Clippers Analysis: Fuck the Clippers, but it makes sense. SF is the glaring hole on this team. Do they have the money for HB though?

Los Angeles Lakers Analysis: Lakers will have a ton of money heading into the season. They’re priority should be to lock down Jordan Clarkson. I think they will move forward with D’Angelo Russell, Clarkson, and Julius Randle as their core, with Lou Williams coming off the bench. That leaves Nick Young who can play SG/SF and Larry Nance Jr. who in some places is listed as a SF to play in that position. Young has a contract until 2017 so I think he will be traded or he’ll continue to come off the bench. Nance to me plays more like a PF so I believe he will back up Randle. Hibbert won’t be re-signed so SF and C will be the major holes on this team. I think the Lakers pursuit of HB will depend on whether they win the Ben Simmons sweepstakes.

Memphis Grizzlies Analysis: 4 of 5 starters are out of contract. Conley should be a priority re-sign, as he is a top quality guard. Jeff Green has been starting over Randolph so they might rate him highly and bring him back. I’m not sure how great Lee and Matt Barnes have been. If they re-sign Lee and let go of Matt, while still having money left over they might make a pass at the other Barnes.

Minnesota Timberwolves Analysis: I think for the Timberwolves it depends on whether they think LaVine is good enough to start at SG alongside Rubio. If so Wiggins will move to SF. I think SF priority also depends on whether KG retires (he has 1 more year on his contract) but either way they might look for a starting PF

New Orleans Pelicans Analysis: Davis is the only true constant in this starting 5, maybe Asik as well since he is on that horrible contract. Cole’s contract is up, but it seems like Holiday is the would be starting PG going forward. They’re pursuit of Barnes depends on whether Alonzo Gee accepts his Player Option or not as I think he is a starting quality SF.

Portland Trailblazers Analysis: Portland might be the sleep pick here. They have a lot of cap space and are mostly losing depth in the free agency. Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum are sure locks as starters, which leaves the other 3 positions as question marks. Depending on how Aminu pans out they might go after HB.

Verdict (order of teams most likely to sign HB):

1) Lakers

2) Nets

3) Trailblazers

4) Grizzlies

5) Mavericks

6) Pelicans

7) Timberwolves

8) Hawks

9) Clippers
