Terror threat level raised to 'severe' meaning another attack 'highly likely' in UK

Is it though?

The stats on this are really wierd - if you google "is terrorism increasing" you will see lots of graphs that appear to agree with you that terrorism is worse now than ever before.

The number of deaths is at a record high - but not because of the US and UK. We have classified a number of civil wars as terrorism and count war deaths in Syria and Afganistan as terrorism deaths. ISIS shoot a helicopter down with a tank and we call it terrorism because dispite their operation of courts and collection of taxes, we don't call them a state (except by name?!). We don't recognize Taiwan as a state either so the number might get crazy pretty soon. It's obviously a war.

The deaths in the US and UK are pretty typical. In the UK we had the IRA, and in the US they have had this background noise of religious nutters with guns for years. The number of deaths, which appart from the 9/11 spike are at 70s levels, are surely the ground truth for how much terrorism is happening. And yet, the graphs you'll find will tell you the number of incidents has gone throught the roof. Because people posting "kill the president on reddit" is carefully logged and classified as a terrorist plot.

I remember as a kid, waking at night to tremors as IRA bombs blew up parts of london. I recognising the sound because I had heard it before recently. I remember my parents carrying me running out of the tube because of another bomb threat evacuation. Recently, we've had the London Bridge attacks, the westminster thing... I'm not saying there is no terrorism I'm just saying this doesn't look worse...
