The whole problem stems from the devs' obsession to "social gaming". You don't get anything for playing solo freestyle and very little from the campaign. You're forced to use these "social" features to get anything out of the game and people who don't want to do that are going to do the bare minimum; slap together a terrible mix for the events and then farm XP with votes.

I personally don't want to do anything social in this game. I don't want to follow or be followed, I don't want to record or share mixes or play multiplayer with randoms. I want to play solo freestyle for fun. I'm sure that the reason 99% of the event mixes sound like shit is because people are forced to do them for the rewards so they just slap something together to get it over with.
