Innocent until proven guilty is an assumption in regards to legal process. It doesn’t prohibit people from raising concerns. I believe OJ Simpson was a murderer. I believe Cardinal Pell was, at the very least, complicit in child sex offences. Im free to say this until the cows come home - there is no law that says that society has to view everyone as innocent until they’re convicted of a crime.
And I fail to see how it’s absurd to have these concerns regarding war crimes. There is:
helmet cam footage of an Australian soldier executing an unarmed person
helmet cam footage/recording between two operators where they discuss the execution of non combatants
the brereton report found evidence of war crimes.
And on a lesser extent:
this video highlights a podcast where an ex serviceman admits there was a coordinated effort to lie to investigators regarding a blue on blue event. Not a war crime, but extremely concerning that is evidence of deeper cultural
the Scojo podcast often describes the use of using throw downs. This is a war crime. You can play it off as a joke if you want, and lots of it is, but I think that it’s reasonable to believe there is truth to it.
I believe, factoring in all of the above, Australian soldiers probably did commit war crimes in Afghanistan.
And I don’t think it’s absurd whatsoever to admit this.
