Tourism to U.S. under Trump is down, costing $4.6B and 40,000 jobs

I'm not sure Americans realize how unpleasant entering the USA is under even the best of conditions. I've traveled reasonably widely, and the only time border guards have ever been remotely unpleasant to me (a white lady, no criminal record, no tattoos, looking like a librarian) is into the USA. Nowhere in Europe or Asia or Latin America did anyone give more than a cursory shrug, but into the USA I was asked questions about drug smuggling-- they can argue it's "policy," but I would ask on what basis.

Canada was considering allowing an expedited security process into the USA which would allow faster transit in exchange for conferring certain rights to American guards on Canadian soil; under Trump, we've pumped the brakes.

And also:

  • Asking non-white Canadian citizens to get a visa, which is not required-- Canadians, regardless of race, do not need a visa to enter the USA
  • Asking Muslim Canadians questions about their religion and politics at the border, which is nonsense
  • Telling gay Canadians that they can't come into the USA because... Hooking up is counter to American values?

And those are Canadians: generally English-speaking, border congruent, un-scary, familiar. I cannot imagine trying to visit from Lebanon or Brazil or somewhere recently labelled a "shithole."
