I watched “Hollow Man” (2000).

Guess I expected something more. I mean, with movies like Total Recall and Starship Troopers he manages to put his expensive special effects to good use and tell an interesting story at the same time. Maybe everyone got sick of Verhoven once Showgirls arrived in terms of respect, but even in hindsight this movie is pretty pathetic. Even if you hate Showgirls, it is at the very least unique.

And yeah, the effects are great. But how much they work for the movie really depends on the scenario. Some movies get by well enough with their special effects even if other elements are lacking. But lately I've been getting a string of films with interesting effects knocked by lousy writing and direction. Hollow Man is just another of the bunch.

It's nice to expand your horizons, but given that Verhoven publicly regrets this I'm not sure what words to offer in defence especially since I agree with him. Anyone could make a film like Hollow Man. People liked Verhoven because he actually had a style--one lacking here.
