Weekly /r/AnimeSuggest discussion thread (27 Apr 2015)

I finally finished my new MAL CSS. It took a while to get the right balance of color, personalization, usability, and speed. I'm pretty happy with it. Now that you're there, anyone want to vouch for some anime on my P2W list? Nothing's grabbed me in a while.

As for anime, I watched Ghost in the Shell. It was really good. It was really short too. I'm always baffled by these shorter movies and how they can have such a presence with such a short runtime, but it accomplished it well. It retroactively reminded me a lot of Psycho Pass, only it succeeded where I think Psycho Pass failed. Its biggest strength is its world and how thoroughly believable it is. I did find it funny how even though it's the most iconic part of the series, the spider tank was the most silly and jarring part of the movie. Like, before that, I was really digging the characters, world, action, and all of a sudden, giant spider tank. The ending was shocking. It was great, and I look forward to the rest of the series.

I also watched a bit of Shirobako. I don't know. I've heard it compared to Hanasaku Iroha, which I see. The tone is really similar to Hansaku Iroha, as is the positive and enthusiastic main character, but I'm not entirely down with the plot. We don't know what the anime is supposed to be, so we have no way of knowing whether anything that happens is good or bad. We just have to take the music's word for it, and assume they are doing the right thing, even though for all we know, the anime could be a disaster. The drama feels really forced and the entire thing comes across as masturbatory. I'll keep at it, and I hope I end up liking it, even if that's not the case right now.
