What are your thoughts about The 2nd Law?

One interesting thing that everyone's been talking about on the .mu boards is how the initial reaction to T2L was similar to that of Drones right now and quite positive, but unfortunately, T2L has not "aged" well and songs have done the opposite of growing on people.

As for me...

Supremacy: Really liked it at first because guitars, but this one has not aged well. It just drags for me, and the riff doesn't really do much for me anymore. Believe it or not, "heavy" doesn't necessarily make a for a good listen.

Madness: Hated it at first as a calculated radio hit (which it was... it's even in the 'Song 2' tracklisting position) but it's grown on me. It's a good song, but not necessarily something I go out of my way to listen to. Released at a perfect time when minimalism was gaining popularity allowing it to easily top the Alternative Charts in America. Still wouldn't be going crazy about getting it in a live set, but at least the glasses should be gone forever now.

Panic Station: Loved it initially as the best "fun" song Muse has ever done, but after seeing it live, I can say it's way better on the album and doesn't need to be in live sets if they're still going to be playing SMBH. Best music video since Knights.

Survival: I can only enjoy listening to the solo, which really chugs along nicely live... but the choir bits remain far too over the top for me. Never mind that the song set a new lyrical low... they went way too far.

Follow Me: Has aged very poorly. Would have liked if Matt hadn't stopped playing guitar live on it, as it really gave the song some oomph in the low end.

Animals: Didn't do anything for me initially, but I now recognize it as one of the best songs on the album. Too bad about the terrible crowd riot sound effects and restrained riff tone, but at least the Rome version solves the latter issue.

Explorers: One of my least favourite Muse songs. The low point of the album, it absolutely killed any momentum they had built during the T2L gig I saw.

Big Freeze: Could never get into it, and still can't. I appreciate the interesting guitar effect that resembles Map, but the rest just feels a bit to cheesy for me.

Save Me: Would be a great b-side. I have never found myself going back to listen to this track outside of it popping up on shuffle.

Liquid State: Great, and even better live. Too short... really needs a bridge or some sort of shift to make things more interesting.

Unsustainable: Better live, and a very cool use of effects. Don't think it was a good decision to use it as a teaser, as it just lead to the "MUSE WENT DUBSTEPZ" misconception when it was really only the one track.

Isolated System: A beautiful track... my favourite song on the album. Very well composed, and the sampling doesn't get too much in the way like it does in songs like Animals and more recently, Psycho. Reminds me of the old instrumental B-Sides like Forced In and Nishe. Like those tracks, it would be cool if they could adapt a shortened version to be played live as an interlude of sorts.

Overall: far less than the sum of its parts, and not improving with time. The flow is an absolute mess. While some say "that's the whole point!" in relation to therodyamics, I really don't find the argument convincing as even if it was an artistic choice, it's one that gets in the way of the core of the art. Probably my least favourite Muse album, and it's the opposite of a grower as time passes, unfortunately.
