A wholesome outlook on this season

I think there's a very realistic chance that 38 sucks, 39 is middling, and 40 as a returnee season will also be deeply flawed.

Jeff is getting old. Who knows if Survivor has a future.

Now I'm not saying I expect the end of Survivor, but as the final votes we're being read last night, it occurred to me that I might be watching the conclusion of the last great Survivor season, and although it was bittersweet, I was just thankful that we had this season as a possible cap to all the things that have made Survivor so great through it's entire run. This season really had it all, and was a great blend of old school and new school, and would be an amazing send off if the show ended today. If we never get another great season, I'm glad we got David vs. Goliath - one last iconic newbie season in what are possibly the twilight years of Survivor. I think given the context, and coming off the heels of some questionable choices from production, the fact that this season was so phenomenal against all odds has to put it in consideration for one of the best ever.

I'm trying not to let recency bias affect that decision, but DvG is historic. High quality, but also hugely impactful and timely. The season the die hard fans deserved.

I was close to giving up on the show, and then this season just blew me away. It'll always be special to me.
