Don't blame the developer for your motion sickness.
Eh, I think this is a bit harsh. The developer is, at least, partially to blame. If they had done enough playtests to ensure a good user experience, they likely would have encountered a couple of users who got motion sickness and could have fixed it. Additionally, they may have encountered it and decided not to worry about it because it was a seemingly small number of people who suffered from it.
I once worked on a game with an airborn character who had one of the most nauseating cameras I've ever seen. The lead designer had no clue what the hell he was doing when it came to the cameras - but he was the kind of lead who never wanted to let anyone else have control over any aspect of the game.... so despite constant complaints, he decided it wasn't a big deal.
We brought a group of children in to play the game for a couple of hours one afternoon... and 4 different 8-11 year old girls started puking. Even then, the lead designer scoffed and said 'maybe [he'd] get around to it later'. I ultimately wrote up a document on how to fix it and sent it off to the guy who'd actually be changing it and CC'd the lead late Friday night.
By Monday, the fix was already in place and we were waiting on the new build. Before we'd even seen the build with my fix, the lead designer responded to my email - tearing me a new asshole for having gone over his head - and reassuring everyone that he ultimately had veto power.
The build came and everyone on the team was praising the new camera - finally happy that they could use that character without getting sick and could actually line up their attacks properly. Of course, this pissed the lead off... from there, he got more and more closed off - allowing even less feedback to get through.
A month or so later, we had to have a meeting with the Publisher to determine if the game was to get an extension - or if it were to be completely axed... because it was a decent premise for a game - but a horrible, HORRIBLE execution. During the meeting, we all played the game to demonstrate it... No one was making any noise - because we all hated the fucking game. The publisher then just asked "Uh... are you guys even playing? I don't hear any one!"
To which the lead designer reacted to by giving us all a cold, dead stare and then mouthing "Come one guys, make some noise" and he pumped his arms up and down.
An hour later, the game was cancelled - and we all rejoiced.
Not sure why I shared this, It just came to mind and it was fun thinking about it while I wrote it out.
