so this is an issue with windows 10 not meshing well with nvidia optimus.
it's totally a software issue and it's more of a windows 10 problem than a nvidia one. if you go back to win 7 or 8, you'll see there's no problem whatsoever.
the reason why the stutter happens in some programs and doesn't in others is b/c certain programs are activating the nvidia gpu for some reason. whenever you switch from intel integrated graphics to dedicated nvidia graphics, it spawns the lag.
there is currently no fix from both microsoft's and nvidia's end. windows 10 is a mess and microsoft won't do shit!
there are two workarounds i've found though:
1) go to device manager and disable the nvidia 1060 gpu. then just re-enable only when you need to use the gpu (gaming). this is pretty cumbersome however.
2) the second method is to spawn a process that is using the nvidia gpu all the time. this way, you won't experience any lag since your computer will no longer be moving back and forth between integrated and dedicated gpu. i believe MSI actually created a exe file for its customers to serve this purpose but it didn't really work for me. what i found to work for me was to go to nvidia settings and set the preferred graphics processor to nvidia. then, b/c my browser of choice is firefox, I open firefox and enable "hardware acceleration" which allows firefox to use the nvidia gpu for certain tasks. then go back to nvidia settings and in the "program settings" tab, make sure you select nvidia gpu for firefox to ensure firefox uses nvidia gpu instead of integrated graphics when you run firefox. Now, just always have firefox open (either minimized or on-screen). This will keep the nvidia gpu engaged and won't result in the stuttering that occurs from the computer switching from integrated to dedicated.
Sorry that was kinda long but I had been so frustrated with this problem for months and no one on the internet had a solution for me. This one guy said a clean install of windows and drivers worked but honestly, I clean installed mine using different orders and all that jazz probably 8 times and it didn't do jack. Don't waste your time trying to find a fix b/c there ain't a legit fix. Don't be me lol. If some of y'all lurkers have found a better solution, please post!
