4-foot shark eaten in one bite by huge Grouper fish.

I've been escaping the cold in Wisconsin by going to Ft Myers for almost 20 years now. Here's some local knowledge that might help...

  • The island of Sanibel is a short drive away over a bridge...but its worlds away. You go from a healthy-sized city to an semi-pristine island with few residents. You could spend the entire day on the beach and not see another soul.

  • Like collecting beautiful seashells? Pretty much any beach around Ft. Myers will be carpeted with exotic shell with new ones washed up by each tide.

  • Renting a boat there is like renting a car. Spend $150 and rent one, you'll see everything from a new perspective. You can drive up to many restaurants by boat, catch a bite to eat, then drive off in your boat again. If you've never driven a boat before the rental place will give you a quick tutorial. It's like driving a car, but you have to coast to stop (no such thing as boat brakes).

  • Why stay at a boring or cramped hotel? Rent a 2 bedroom/2 bath condo with full amenities right on the ocean for the same amount (maybe even less if you stay at least a week).

  • IF you do want to do a hotel, go 10 miles father south to the city of Estero and stay at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa. You are still in greater Ft. Myers, are right off a major road (US 41) but are completely separated from civilization. They even have a private boat that takes you to the resorts PRIVATE beach so that you don't have to mix with the peasants. Iz niceeee.

  • Traveling North/South is fairly painless because of the interstate. However, there are only surface streets running East-West and vice-versa, so be prepared for traffic in those directions, especially during rush hour.

  • Naples is only a 1/2 hour drive South. Want to see how really rich people live? Like, the kind of people that own Google & Apple? Drive down their beach road. So many mansions for so many miles that you wonder where the hell so many people get so much money from.

  • Ft Myers is only a 45 minute drive from Big Cypress Preserve, i.e. The Florida Everglades. This is nature at its most primordial. You'll see alligators bigger than some cars, birds of every kind and color, plants you never knew existed. It's like stepping back into a Jurassic swamp. Amazing.
