Advice on arguing for remote work postdoc

Do your job and show your PI that you don't need to be present to be an asset to the lab. Ultimately that's what matters. If they tell you that you have to be present, then force him to fire you. It is probably harder to fire you than to keep you since your salary as a postdoc is going to be peanuts anyways. If that's your best chance to stay in academia, then leave and go to industry, where people are reasonable, and they won't force you to drive 10 hours a day. The fact that you are open to it makes me think that you don't really know your worth because it sounds so ridiculous to me, that's because academia is a cult. Establish some boundaries!!
