Has anyone played Undercity? Is it any good? Whats the game play like?

Hi PartyFoulWMH,

Just so you know, I don't really like most of your articles. They are usually pretty bad. That said, I don't really understand the hate. You are doing what you love, and that's admirable. Still, if you really want to make something out of it, I highly recommend taking a few publication/writing/journalism courses at a college or something.

Now... Undercity.

First off, it's an amazing deal $$-wise. I paid $60, and there are 44 really good quality minis in there. No, they aren't Warmachine level high quality, but compared to other plastic miniatures out there, they are really good. I would rate them slightly above Reaper Bones in quality. For people who don't have those miniatures from Warmachine already, and who are looking to get into IKRPG, it's a pretty amazing set. Also, anyone saying they don't match the scale of Warmachine figures are wrong (I checked). In fact, a couple are better scaled to Warmachine models than some older Warmachine models (cough cough B13th cough cough). If you aren't a pro-painter, you really won't even notice they aren't the Warmachine version unless you pick them up (except for the changes like weapon swaps, etc).

Now for the actual gameplay. It's okay. It's awfully crunchy for a board game. I mean, PP did what they do, and it's basically IKRPG without the ability to make your own characters, and without the need for a GM. The "campaign" it comes with I'd say is adequate. It's longish, and there is a little bit of replayability (I can see maybe playing through the whole thing twice, three times tops). That's a hefty amount of play time. It's fun, and it feels like a game of IKRPG with a crappy GM.

Another problem it has is that is is a game for four players. No more, no less. This is awkward. There are only four playable characters, and that means that you don't really pick your team, you just pick who's playing what. I'm planning on testing running IKRPG characters through it just to see what happens (spoiler: it's going to be fun, but be hilariously bad). Also it means that you can't play with 5 or more people, and if you play with less, someone will probably be running two of the characters. If you have exactly 3 friends, it works out alright though.

All-in-all, the whole time I was playing I was thinking, "for this much work, I might as well be playing IKRPG." However, it is fun, and I don't feel like I wasted my money (because minis).
